The Museum is close to completing its major redevelopment and reopening to the public! The historic cobbles are being reinstated, the new displays are being installed, and the boiler restoration is almost finished.
About the project
What has happened recently
The Museum is reopening soon! The building work has overrun again, so we have delayed our reopening date. However, construction is progressing - the new entance is almost complete and the historic cobbles are being reinstated. We plan to reopen in June (date to be confirmed). In the meantime, we are running behind-the-scenes tours and hosting Steampunk in Cambridge, which will give you a sneak preview of the site.
Our new displays are coming together. We have started putting objects into our new display cases and this week, the text panels and labels were installed across the site. Our interactive model of the Pumping Station, complete with horrid smells and a flushing toilet, has also arrived.
Huge progress has been made on the boiler restoration and it is almost finished! The re-tubing has been completed and the boiler passed its hydrostatic test with no issues. The external and refractory walls are now being rebuilt and are halfway to completion. The next stop is reconnecting the water and steam lines.
Thank you to Historic England for funding a condition assessment of the Pumping Station's roof. Parts of the roof had been damaged by water and corrosion to the embedded steelwork. Thanks to Historic England, we were able to have the extent of the problem assessed and the whole roof investigated. While the scaffolding was up, we also took some great photos of the Museum from above!
