2024 Cambridge FestivaL PREVIEW

Volunteers from Cambridge Museum of Technology and Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group will be offering free, in-person and online contributions to 2024 Cambridge Festival:

Online industrial gazetteer: take a hike (or get on your bike)!

In 2001, late Museum volunteer Peter Filby co-authored a guide to the industrial archaeology of Cambridgeshire for the Association for Industrial Archaeology.

Inspired by Peter Filby’s contribution to industrial and landscape history of the city, Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group will launch an online gazetteer (hosted on the Museum of Technology’s website), which will provide easy-to-follow routes that explore the city’s industrial heritage.

The first edition of the online gazetteer explores pedestrian and cycle routes that follow the railway track between Cambridge station and Cambridge North station.

To mark the launch of the online industrial gazetteer by Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group, an accompanying video – presented as part of the 2024 Cambridge Festival of Film – takes a bird’s eye view of 80 years of changing railway landscapes around the city.

Inspired by the 1944 aerial photography of the city (recently published by Historic England) and complemented with contemporary vistas from drones, this immersive video (produced by Museum volunteer Gordon Davies) will feature contributions courtesy of:
