The gas permeameter was an instrument designed to measure the leakage of gas through the fabric of airships. It was developed at the beginning of the First World War by Gilbert Arden Shakespear and manufactured by Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company. This particular one was used at RAF Cardington in Bedfordshire.
