A free exhibition about a new public art work by Michael Brennand Wood for River Lane, Cambridge

An exhibition about the inspiration, ideas and process behind Michael Brennand-Wood’s public commission for Anglia House, the new student accommodation on Newmarket Road and River Lane.

Pictographic comprises of two large corten panels facing River Lane. The imagery on the panels is derived from local references that Michael Brennand-Wood has sampled visually. These include references to the Cambridge Museum of Technology, local street names, books, garage and bike parts.

The commission has been designed in layers with the initial imagery derived from the flow of water. In the next layer, images of electrical and energy sources reference the generation of power and educational learning. These have been assembled into a flowing image that celebrates the richness of the area’s history.

Michael Brennand Wood is widely regarded as one of the most innovative artists working with textiles currently. He exhibits internationally and has work in public collections in the UK, Australia, the USA and Japan. He has, since the 1980’s, worked on a number of public commissions in a wide variety of materials and media. Michael lives outside Cambridge.

The public art programme for the new student accommodation was developed by Commission Projects and commissioned by the Watkin Jones Group.

The exhibition is in the Cambridge Museum of Technology’s Exhibitions, Education and Community Building which has recently been refurbished. Please enter through the Cheddars Lane entrance – the exhibition is in the low wooden building on the right-hand side.
