Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group has teamed up with Dying for Life Cambridge for our April talk, Coffin Stones and Coffin Waggons: 500 Years of Moving the Dead.
Dr John Rolfe will take us on a journey many of us prefer not to think about. He will trace the growth of the industry through times when there were too many bodies, looking at the physical means of moving corpses, the cultural restraints, and the legacies.
Dr Rolf is a retired engineer, psychologist and academic, whose career focused on aviation. His many interests include the role of monasteries in technological change, trade tokens and admiralty telegraph, as well, of course, as the technology of moving the dead.
The talk will take place in the Pye Building at Cambridge Museum of Technology. Entrance on the night is via the Museum’s Cheddars Lane gate.
Tickets are available on the door for £3 a head. Cambridge Museum of Technology members and volunteers can come along for free.
This event forms part of the Dying for Life festival which will culminate at the Crematorium on 13th May with ‘Fun Things To Do When You Are Dead’. More details can be found here Event 2023 May | Dying For Life | Cambridge
